Stretch Mark Reduction | Epical HealthMed
Medically reviewed by Dr. Carlos A. Ramirez, MD, MBA, FAAFP, BCEM, IFM-C, FMCP-M (Epical HealthMed)
Stretch marks (striae) form when the skin stretches faster than the dermis can adapt — during pregnancy, rapid growth spurts, or significant weight gain — causing collagen fibres to tear and leave visible scar-like marks. At Epical HealthMed in Mission, TX, we use a combination of fractional laser, microneedling, and radiofrequency treatments to stimulate new collagen and elastin within stretch marks, reducing their colour, depth, and overall visibility for smoother, more even-looking skin.
Quick answers
Can stretch marks be...
Can stretch marks be completely removed? Not completely. However, significant improvement in colour, texture, and depth is achievable, making them much less visible. Early (red/pink) stretch marks respond better than mature (white/silver) ones.
Which stretch marks respond...
Which stretch marks respond best? Striae rubrae (red/pink, early) respond most dramatically. Striae albae (white/silver, mature) show partial improvement — better texture and blending but colour normalisation is harder to achieve.
What treatments are most...
What treatments are most effective? Fractional laser, RF microneedling, and microneedling with PRP have the strongest evidence for stretch mark reduction. Multiple sessions are needed for best results.
Is there downtime? Mild...
Is there downtime? Mild redness and sensitivity for 2-4 days after most sessions. Deeper laser treatments may involve 5-7 days of more visible recovery.
Why stretch marks form and look the way they do
Stretch marks represent dermal scarring — the dermis tears under excessive mechanical tension and heals with disorganised collagen fibres that differ in structure and density from normal skin. Early stretch marks are red or purple (striae rubrae) because of visible blood vessels and inflammation within the newly forming scar. Over time, these mature into pale, silver-white marks (striae albae) as vascularity diminishes and the scar tissue matures.
Common causes include pregnancy (abdomen, breasts, thighs), rapid weight gain or loss, adolescent growth spurts (back, thighs, arms), bodybuilding (shoulders, arms), and prolonged corticosteroid use.
Treatment approach by location
- Abdomen (post-pregnancy): the most common location; RF microneedling over 3-4 sessions produces significant improvement in most patients
- Thighs and hips: respond well to both RF microneedling and fractional laser as skin is thicker in these areas
- Breasts: treatable but technique must account for sensitivity and skin thickness variations
- Back and shoulders (bodybuilding-related): wide, deep marks in these areas require multiple sessions; surface improvement is achievable though complete resolution is rarely achieved

RF microneedling
delivers radiofrequency energy directly into the stretch mark dermis via fine needles, triggering new collagen and elastin production within the scar. One of the most effective available treatments for all stages of stretch marks
Fractional laser (non-ablative or ablative)
creates thousands of micro-injuries within the stretch mark, stimulating dermal repair. Most effective for striae rubrae; also improves texture of albae
Microneedling with PRP
growth factors enhance tissue regeneration within the stretch mark and improve colour blending at the mark margins
Chemical peels (TCA cross)
targeted TCA application to improve surface texture of white stretch marks
Topical retinoids
used between sessions to continue collagen stimulation and improve skin texture and colour uniformity
When to start treatment
Treating stretch marks early (while still red or purple) produces the best results because the skin is still in an active healing phase with higher metabolic activity. Even mature white marks, however, show meaningful improvement with aggressive treatment protocols.
What to expect at Epical HealthMed
What to expect at Epical HealthMed
- Stretch mark assessment: classification by age, location, width, and depth to guide treatment selection
- Personalised series: typically 4-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results
- Post-treatment care: gentle moisturiser, vitamin C serum to support collagen, and SPF on any exposed treated areas
- Progress photos: standardised photography to document improvement objectively
Realistic expectations
Most patients achieve a 50-70% improvement in the overall appearance of their stretch marks after a full treatment series. Complete elimination of mature white marks is not achievable with any current treatment. Early red/pink marks can show near-complete resolution in some cases.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does vitamin E oil or cocoa butter prevent stretch marks?
Clinical evidence for these topicals preventing stretch marks is weak. Keeping skin well moisturised during periods of rapid growth may reduce severity but cannot reliably prevent marks in genetically predisposed individuals.
Can I get stretch mark treatment while pregnant?
No. Most laser and RF treatments are contraindicated during pregnancy. We recommend waiting until 3-6 months post-partum and finishing breastfeeding before beginning treatment.
How many sessions are needed?
A series of 4-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart is typical. Red marks often show significant improvement after 2-3 sessions. White marks generally need the full series and respond more modestly.
Is RF microneedling painful on the abdomen?
Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand, making the procedure manageable for most patients. The abdomen is moderately sensitive — most patients rate discomfort as 3-4/10 with numbing.
Are there natural treatments that help?
Consistent topical retinoid use provides meaningful collagen stimulation between sessions. Vitamin C supports collagen synthesis. Adequate hydration and protein intake create the best environment for skin repair.
Do stretch marks come back after treatment?
Treated stretch marks do not return if weight is stable. However, new stretch marks can form in different areas if further rapid stretching occurs.
Can men have stretch mark treatment?
Absolutely. Men commonly develop stretch marks from rapid muscle gain, weight changes, or growth spurts and respond equally well to the same treatments.
Is there an age limit for treatment?
Most treatments are appropriate for adults 18+. Adolescents with active growth-related marks may benefit from waiting until growth stabilises before comprehensive treatment.
